3 to battle for Mawu presidency

The battle for the Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) presidency is heating up.

With the body’s annual general meeting (AGM), which is scheduled for December 21 2024 in Lilongwe, around the corner, it has transpired that three people will battle it out for the presidency.

The three are Shadreck Chikoti, Norah Lungu and Chifundo Mkwanda.

Outgoing president

Chikumbutso Ndaferankhande, who is not seeking re-election, confirmed that all was set for the AGM.

“Everything is in order,” he said.

Talking about his time in office, he said things panned out well.

“It has been a learning curve,” Ndaferankhande said.

He said he was happy that three books—namely Azotus Kingdom, Akuzike and The Gods and Pilgrims Together—had entered school curricula.

“This is no mean feat,” Ndaferankhande said.

Others that are vying for positions include Foster Benjamin (vice president), Charity Munyimbili and Matilda Phiri (general secretary), Jacinta Chisi (treasurer), Chifuniro Banda and Pastor Gracium Mwandira ( public relations officer).

Meanwhile, Mawu former vice president Christopher Chitukula, who initially expressed interest in contesting for the presidency of the association, has pulled out of the race.

“Due to other challenges beyond my control, I am not contesting,” he said.

He was, however, quick to say as chairperson for the elections’ committee, he was looking forward to the elections.

“It promises to be a successful event,” Chitukula said.

The current executive’s term of office ended last month.
