Four young artists, namely Vanessa Litta, James Chavula, Jackline Chimatula and Christopher Master, leave the country in September to participate in the Musicians Organisers Volunteer Exchange (Move) spearheaded by Music Crossroads Malawi.
Litta, now teaching music and dance at Jacaranda School for Orphans in Blantyre, is going to Brazil alongside Chavula, whereas Chimatula, a drummer and star of Daughters Band, is heading to Norway alongside Master.
Music Crossroads Malawi Director Mathews Mfune said on Monday that Move is a programme that has seen 45 participants take part thus far.
“The strides that the Move programme has made are significant and many of these young people are making a big impact in the industry,” Mfune said.
He added that this year they will not be sending participants to Mozambique due to various challenges.
“We usually send participants to Brazil, Norway and Mozambique, but this year it is only Brazil and Norway,” Mfune said.
The four artists are scheduled to depart on September 18, 2024 and will spend close to a year in Norway and Brazil.
Litta expressed her anticipation for participating in the Move programme and representing her country abroad.
“This is my first time living abroad for a year. I am excited to exchange music and dance from Malawi,” she said.
Move is an exchange programme between JM Norway and sister organisations Music Crossroads in Malawi and Mozambique and the organisation Projeto Guri in Brazil.
The programme exchanges youth with musical and organisational skills, empowering them with new tools and intercultural understanding to enrich participants and their local cultural communities.
Previous recipients of the Move programme include Jaco Jana, Phalyce Kumdana, Dan Khoviwa and Chisomo Ngondo.
