University of Malawi (Unima) in Zomba on Saturday hosted Zatikwana Poetry Night which was headlined by renowned poet Robert Chiwamba.
The two-hour poetry night session, organised by Youth and Society (Yas), focused on poetry that tackled corruption.
During his set, Chiwamba, who is also Poetry Association of Malawi (Pam) leader, he dished out poems such as ‘Kwathu Katangale Analowa.’
The poem takes a swipe at top government officials and other duty bearers who have thrown caution to the wind to engage in corrupt practices, which has led to Malawians failing to access social services.
Chiwamba dared fellow poets to use their poetry to tackle issues affecting society in order to bring about change.
“Apart from entertainment, poetry or art in general is there to advocate for, among others, improved human rights as well as condemn social injustices,” the Pam leader said.
Chiwamba offered close to four poems during the poetry session that lived up to its billing.
Other poets that starred at the poetry feast included Alfred Kamwendo, Joana Chiwongola, Yohane Pangani, Pole Liomba, Brighton Alfred and Andrew Pasanje.
Unima Workshop Club also performed at the event.
Yas Anti-corruption and Rule of Law Project Officer Jane Chibisa said they used the poetry night to amplify voices on corruption fight.
“We want the students to be in the forefront condemning corruption and also to let them know that they can speak out on issues affecting the country through different artistic skills like poetry, music and drama,” Chibisa said.
Kamwendo, who is Unima Writers Workshop president, called upon non-governmental organisations in the country to engage them and at the same time conduct poetry sessions at the institution as part of promoting advocacy poetry.
