Artists groove with students at BT gig

Renowned artists such as Amapiano mayor Zeze Kingston and dancehall star Malinga Mafia partied with Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) students in Blantyre in a show which started on Saturday and stretched to the early hours of Sunday.

Organised by Money Making Music with support from Cape Stars, the gig accorded students an opportunity to shake off the stress of studies and appreciate music.

The concert had no live band, with artists serving their music backed by DJs on the decks.

Despite that, members of the audience relished the performances.

Hosted by MC Sambwita, among others, the concert saw DJs setting the tone by dishing out covers from local and international artists, with the audience dancing and singing along to some of the songs.

Sambwita led the students in songs that prided in Mubas being a top university over others in the country.

However, it turned out to be a long wait for artists’ performances, which came to life after midnight.

But once artists’ performances started, it was non-stop routines until the early hours of Sunday.

Budding artists such as Shano Index warmed up the stage.

Dubbed ‘For the Streets Freshmans’, the show also featured Afana Ceez, who enjoyed support from the audience, serving songs such as ‘Kwachema’ and ‘Pakala Pakala’, before he paved the way for Malinga Mafia.

Malinga Mafia’s entry was welcomed with a delirium of cheers as he joined Afana Ceez in his last tune.

The artist displayed verve and related with the audience and there were even stints when Malinga asked to do ‘freestyles’, which he did without problems.

Towards the end of his set, Malinga Mafia was joined by Zeze Kingston before the ‘Go Go Go’ maker took over the stage.

Backed by DJ Drew on the decks, Zeze continued from where Malinga Mafia had left off and kept the stage active.

“We are not at a show but are here to party,” the artist said before throwing his routine slogan “Zeze we wanna party”.

Jetu was also billed to perform at the concert but did not show up.
