DJ Salvo conquers

The second edition of the King or Queen of Festive DJ Battle ended on Saturday at Blues Bar and Restaurant in Blantyre, with DJ Salvo coming out top.

DJ Salvo, real name Grem Banda, outclassed two other finalists, namely DJs Ghost and Kho, to claim the top position during the grand finale.

As winner, DJ Salvo pocketed K1.2 million, with runner-up DJ Ghost receiving K300,000 whereas DJ Kho, on third position, pocketed K100,000.

“It was tough but I am happy to come out victorious. I am still learning from the best but this win motivates me to continue working extra hard,” he said.

His deejaying walk dates back to secondary school when he used to entertain fellow students before he took it seriously.

“I will invest the money I have won in the same talent as I will buy new deejaying gear and share some of the money with my mother,” the 22-year-old DJ said.

DJ Salvo attributed his success to his top performance which, he said, complied with rules and regulations of the contest.

DJ Mighty Virus said yesterday that the DJs’ battle was created to showcase skills of DJs in the country and, at the same time, keep the craft vibrant.

“We have talented DJs in the country but they lack platforms at which to showcase their skills and, at the same time, they do not have spaces for interacting and sharing skills and, so, we decided to create this battle,” he said.

The award-winning DJ said the King or Queen of Festive DJ Battle is also there to keep the industry active and, at the same time, market itself to the world.

“We used to have so many DJ battles in the past—you talk of Sprite DJ battle—but we no longer have them. This is what led to us to create this stage,” Mighty Virus said.

He described the contest as a success and that they were looking forward to the next edition.

“We had planned to give the winner K1 million but Blantyre City Mayor Councillor Jomo Osman added K500,000 and then Waheed Mia also supported us with K100,000,” Mr DJ Mighty Virus said.

The DJ contest, which ran for three weeks, kick-started with a preliminary round.

Thirteen DJs registered for the competition before moving to other stages and, then, the grand finale—which was spiced up by a performance from Afana Ceez.
