K1 million for Mr, Miss Kuhes

Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (Kuhes) students in Blantyre had a long night of fun on Saturday through to the early hours of yesterday as the university crowned Gander Baxter and Teresa Chirwa as Mr and Miss Kuhes, respectively.

Baxter and Chirwa could not hide their excitement after their names were mentioned by one of the master of ceremonies, having collected a certified list from the judges.

“It was tough. I never saw it coming but glory be to God,” Chirwa, holding her certificate, said as she shed tears of joy. It was not easy for the two to claim the crowns and walk away with K500,000 each as they had to shrug off competition from other contestants on the night.

The first prince is Ramzi Msamala whereas the first princess is Emmaculate Jere.

The two received K250,000 each. Frank Mbwana is the second prince whereas Chisomo Ngoma is the second princess. The two received K100,000 each.

Held at Kuhes Sports Complex, students took a break off their studies to have maximum fun during the Mr and Miss Kuhes grand finale that saw contestants battle it out in categories such as traditional and dinner outfits.

According to the organising team, 20 contestants registered to participate in the contest but some of them pulled out at the eleventh hour.

Ten contestants battled it out for Miss Kuhes whereas seven contestants shrugged it off for the Mr Kuhes crown.

The race started from the word go as contestants, one by one, received support on stage and it was during the category of traditional, which saw some contestants coming out as Gule Wamkulu, that every contestant answered a question.
