Kungoni Centre of Culture and Art at Mua in Dedza holds its annual event on Saturday with several activities including an inter-religious service.
Led by Father Brendan O’shea, the annual cultural event that attracts huge audiences is this year running under the theme ‘Good Citizenship: The Foundation of Our Country’ (Umwini Ndiye Maziko A Dziko Lathu: Chimvano Cha Mavu N’choning’a Pamimba).
Father O’Shea called upon people to patronise the cultural event which is part of promoting and preserving the country’s culture.
“Preparations are at an advanced stage and by Saturday we will be ready. The space for performances is ready and we have sent invitations to different people,” he said.
He described the event as special and that tomorrow will be a day of celebration, joy and pride in Malawi culture.
“We open with an inter-religious service as part of uniting everyone and showing that we are all one in the eyes of God. Then thereafter, we will have songs, drama and poetry,” Father O’shea said.
On this year’s theme, Father O’shea said they arrived at it looking at the elections that the country is set to hold next year.
“Next year there are going to be elections, each citizen has a role to play in building up Malawi because we are the foundation and through the performances, we want to reflect on this,” he said.
He said people should brace to see performances from close to 20 dance groups around Mua. “In all these groups, I am excited to say that young people have taken the lead and this is what we want. Young people are involved as part of passing on the knowledge in the promotion and preservation of culture. We are also talking about inclusiveness and so, we have a group from Dzaleka Refugee Camp and persons with disabilities,” Father O’shea said.
