The warm welcome and singing from the boys and girls of the Courageous Kids Foundation in Mpemba, Blantyre, on Friday was proof of their joy following the opening of Mr Luc’s library.
Mr Luc’s Libraries, led by Luc Deschamps with support from other well-wishers, continues its initiative of opening libraries in schools and other locations to assist the government in its fight against illiteracy.
The Courageous Kids Foundation, led by Courageous Musasa, who grew up on the streets after losing her parents at a young age, is home to 98 boys and girls from the streets and others in need.
Deschamps and his wife Marie Da Silva, along with other family members, decided to open their 30th library at the centre.
On a day when rains arrived after a prolonged dry spell, leaving farmers concerned about this year’s yields, Courageous could only express that the opening of the library, long awaited since the foundation’s inception in 2013, was a blessing.
“You are a blessing as our visitors. We have rain today and on top of that, you have given us a library, which will go a long way in providing our boys and girls with access to books and knowledge,” she said.
Courageous added that they have brilliant boys and girls who are talented and hardworking, with some already selected for various public universities in the country.
Deschamps and his wife, who also donated bags of maize and tree seedlings, said they were inspired by the foundation’s work.
“They may not have much but they are doing so much. Through the library, we hope to help boys and girls access knowledge for the betterment of their

The library, supported by a couple based in the United Kingdom, has been beautifully decorated by visual artist Jim Alufisha to provide a conducive environment.
The opening of the library was celebrated with activities from the Courageous Kids Foundation and Jacaranda School for Orphans to showcase the power of the arts.
