Sho Madjozi to star at Lake of Stars as regional headliner

South African musician Sho Madjozi is set to perform at this year’s edition of Lake of Stars (LoS) Festival, which debuts at Fish Eagle Bay in Nkhotakota from September 6 to 8.

The artist, born Maya Wegerif, will perform at LoS as regional headliner.

She is expected to share the stage with acts such as Zeze Kingston, Emmie Deebo, Temwah, Mumba Yachi and Lindsay Chamangurangura.

LoS says in a statement that they are excited to have on board the South African artist, who has starred at iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden as well as collaborated with top artists and won multiple awards, including BET Award for Best New International Artist.

The statement further says Sho Madjozi, famed for tracks ‘Dumi Hi Phone’ and ‘Huku’, has quickly become a global cultural force within just six years.

Her debut album Limpopo Champions League and her viral hit ‘John Cena’ have cemented her place as a global sensation.

The artist’s fusion of languages and genres, along with her dynamic performances, highlights her pride in her Tsonga heritage and her cosmopolitan upbringing.

LoS, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary as well as the country’s 60th independence anniversary, returns to the fold after being out of the limelight for some time.

The festival’s head of media, public relations and relationships, Zilanie Gondwe, said yesterday that people should watch the space for more announcements.

“This festival is dedicated to promoting socio-economic growth as well as showcasing the diversity of Malawian talent, alongside sensational African and international artists,” Gondwe said.

Dubbed ‘Lake of Stars Reactivated’, the event was expected to make a comeback last year but was postponed.

Birthed at Chintheche Inn in Nkhata Bay and founded by Will Jameson in 2004, the festival has in the past hosted top acts that include South Africa’s Freshlyground, Zimbabwe’s Oliver Mtukudzi and Mookomba and Kenya’s Sauti Sol.
