After failing to appear for a gig two months ago due to missing a flight, South African artist Young Stunna, whose real name is Sandile Fortune Msimango, made an appearance in the early hours of Sunday at Scallas Café in Blantyre for a makeup concert.
The artist kept his promise to make up for his absence at Moneymen Club in the commercial city during his debut outing, which attracted a large audience predominantly composed of young people.
Organised by Beerland Festival with support from National Bank of Malawi, the show, hosted by Nicole Kamwendo and Times Group presenter Blak Jak, began on Saturday night and extended into the early hours of the following day.
However, the audience endured a lengthy wait to see the ‘Bopha’ and ‘Adiwele’ star, who took to the stage a few minutes before 3am immediately after Zeze Kingston’s set.
Once on stage, backed by a DJ, he quickly engaged with the audience, who cheered him on and sang along to his tracks.
Despite maintaining his composure through singing and dancing, punctuated by brief pauses for water, his performance lasted less than 30 minutes with only a few songs performed.
“Malawi, I love you,” he declared before exiting, with the audience calling for an encore.
Local acts once again impressed, with Eli Njuchi standing out by adding a drummer and a keyboardist to his set, delivering additional songs including ‘Tempolale’ from his latest project, Jordan Year.
Eli Njuchi also collaborated with Kell Kay on the track ‘Z’, which paid tribute to fallen Malawians including former vice president Saulos Chilima and musicians Martse and Soldier Lucius Banda.
Tuno also had a standout moment, performing live for the first time with Zonke on their track ‘Ndidziwe’. She dazzled with her attire and dance moves.
Beerland Festival official Edward Kawalala expressed satisfaction with the turnout and pledged more concerts.
“We thank our partners such as National Bank of Malawi for their support and the fans for making this show a success. Once again, we kept our promise that Young Stunna would appear this time,” Kawalala said
