For once, students from the University of Malawi (Unima), Malawi College of Accountancy and Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) took time off their busy schedules to enjoy sounds served by a horde of artists during a Southern Region Intercollege Socials event at Mubas Ground in Blantyre.
The show, which Nyasa Music Group organised in partnership with Milly Entertainment, saw Blantyre City Deputy Mayor Isaac Jomo Osman in attendance.
“We, as Blantyre City Council, support such initiatives, hence my presence,” he said before taking to the dance floor to showcase his dance moves in Jetu’s song ‘Chakwaza’.
The students, who came out in large numbers, partied all night from Saturday through to the wee hours of Sunday.
The lineup included acts such as Zeze Kingston, Patience Namadingo, Gemini Major, who is based in South Africa, Fada Moti, Kineo and Aidfest and Nesness.
However, South African star Pcee was in no-show on Saturday.
Nyasa Music Group’s director James Makunje indicated that the artist had missed his flight.
As such, DJ Boo closed the curtain.
As we went to press yesterday evening, Makunje had indicated that Pcee had finally made it and yesternight performed.
He said despite the setback on Saturday, the event was a success.
“The event was great and so was patronage. Artists put up really breathtaking performances,” Makunje said.
Hosted by MC Sambwita, an alumnus of Mubas, and another student from Unima, the gig, which delayed to start but got better with time, saw budding artists warming up the stage before the main acts took over.
Namadingo, who received huge cheers upon entry, was the only artist who performed live with a band, with the rest using DJs such as Flame and Hype.
The singer and guitarist served a number of songs including ‘Mapulani’, ‘Mtendere’ and ‘Msati Mseke’, with patrons singing along.
It was his latest piece, ‘Mumapemphero,’ which dominated, though.
Nesness also starred at the event, dishing out songs such as ‘Chidodo’.
Kineo and Aidfest also stepped up the gear on the night, entertaining people with their well-known songs such as ‘Yekha’.
Gemini Major, who started on a slow note before he turned on the gear, also did enough to win people’s hearts.
He, however, strengthened his set when he collaborated with Achina Gattah Ase and Hayze Engolah.
Fada Moti, with his hoarse voice, was equally good, with patrons singing along to his songs.
Zeze Kingston, who now trades with the name Mayor of Amapiano, also kept the stage lively with songs such as ‘Kusangalala’ and ‘Alamu Anu’. However, the lineup had no female acts.
