Lake of Stars Festival recycles stages into desks

Lake of Stars Festival has donated 100 desks to Kayadzi and Chikhwamba primary schools in Nkhotakota in a repurposing initiative.

Dusty Orange Production (Dope) Malawi, led by its director Sharmila Elias, who is now the licenced producer of Lake of Stars Festival, said yesterday the project was their final part in the 2024 edition.

“This is the final part of our programme at this year’s activities—Day of Ideas Free Youth Festival and Lake of Stars Festival—of repurposing stages into desks,” Elias said.

She said they were pleased to have donated desks to schools, hoping that they would contribute immensely to the development of education in the country.

“These desks were donated to schools where children do not have desks to sit on during classes,” Elias said.

When presenting the items, Lake of Stars Festival also gave out solar lamps to schools.

They were donated by Sunny Money and are meant to assist learners with after-hours learning under the Light Library Initiative with Sunny Money.

Elias hailed the Embassy of the Republic of Ireland, Embassy of Iceland, Britain and Northern Ireland Fund and other partners for the support towards the initiative.

Lake of Stars Festival debuted at Fish Eagle Bay in Nkhotakota District, where local and international artists performed.

They included Sho Madjozi from South Africa.

The festival, which was birthed at Chintheche Inn in Nkhata Bay in 2004, celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.
