Pakhonde Music Festival and Ethno Malawi Music Camp, spearheaded by Music Crossroads Malawi, will for the first time be held in Karonga. Having been held at Chingalire Cultural Centre in Lilongwe in its previous editions, the two annual events will be held at Mufwa Lodge in May this year.
The Ethno Music Camp will run from May 18 to 25, with the Pakhonde Music Festival following up on May 24 to 25.
“At Ethno Malawi Music Camp, participants will have greater interaction with each other and people from the community,” coordinator Angellah Zulanga said.
This year’s Ethno Malawi Music Camp runs from May 18 to 25 in Karonga.
About 20 participants from across the world will be part of the music camp that aims at promoting and preserving culture through the playing of traditional instruments.
Previous editions of Ethno Malawi Music Camp attracted participants from United States of America, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Zulanga said Pakhonde Music Festival, now in its third edition, was premised on celebrating diversity, culture and music around the world and that they were committed to creating an event that exceeded expectations.
Music Crossroads Malawi Director Mathews Mfune said yesterday that they had been contemplating shifting the activities to Karonga for some time. “There is a good view of Lake Malawi. Our partners include Karonga Museum and Lusubilo Music School locally.
It is not about performances only but we will also do a lot of workshops in music,” he said. Pakhonde Music Festival did not take place last year.
